Recent News
- Congressman McGovern, with Gov. Patrick and Lt. Gov. Murray in attendance, announced today that the USDA is providing an additional $41.5 million in emergency funding for the Asian longhorned beetle eradication program. The funding announcement was made at a screening of the new ALB documentary "Lurking in the Trees." To receive a copy of the film, visit http://www.lurkinginthetrees.org/.
- Bids are now being solicited for contractors to do chemical treatments to protect trees in the quarantine zone, due Jan. 20! (Federal Business Opportunities)
- Students at Fall Brook Elementary school in Leominster wrote an ABC Guide to Invasive Species, and Asian longhorned beetle got to be the letter "A."
- Massachusetts Asian longhorned beetle maple posters are now available! To order free copies for outreach purposes, email jennifer.forman-orth AT state.ma.us.
- USDA is planning to test the effectiveness of heat treatment of ALB-infested wood; if the treatments are successful, logs and firewood will be able to be moved out of the quarantine zone (Worcester Telegram & Gazette).
- A new academic review of the Asian longhorned beetle and the Citrus longhorned beetle has been published: "Managing Invasive Populations of Asian & Citrus Longhorned Beetle: A Worldwide Perspective" (Annual Review of Entomology)
- 1655 ALB-infested trees have been slated for removal in the Worcester area this winter, with chemical treatment to begin in the spring of 2010. Tree removals began at the end of December (USDA).
- Governor Patrick has signed a bill allowing Worcester to borrow up to $500,000 for tree replanting (Worcester Telegram & Gazette).
- Find out more about the recent finding of Asian longhorned beetle tree damage in Boylston, which was within the current quarantine zone. (Worcester Telegram & Gazette).
Upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities:
- New Hampshire Cooperative Extension is running an Asian longhorned beetle "Train the Trainer" session this Wednesday, 1/13 in Nashua.
- Now that the leaves are off the trees, this is the perfect time of year to check trees for signs of ALB damage.
- Learn to survey for ALB and ALB tree damage with the Greater Worcester Land Trust. Volunteer crews go out most Thursdays at 12pm. Email anne AT gwlt.org for more details and to RSVP.
- Mass. Dept. of Agricultural Resources staff will be attending the annual meeting of the Massachusetts Maple Producers Association, to speak about ALB and distribute ALB outreach materials for sugarhouses and maple syrup retailers to hand out to the public.
