Recent News

  • Infested trees continue to be found in Boylston and tree removals are ongoing in Shrewsbury, Worcester, and Boylston. Stay up to date on all the recent activity with the Asian Longhorned Beetle Cooperative Program's weekly update, covering Boston and Worcester activities.
  • The Asian longhorned beetle eradication program met with the town of Boylston to discuss options for the Hillside infestation which covers over 55 acres of town property. (The Banner)
  • Residents of Boylston can attend a town hall meeting about the ALB eradication program to ask questions about removals in Boylston on November 8th at Tahato High School, 7pm.
  • Shrewsbury, MA residents and others in the Greater Worcester Asian longhorned beetle infested area may be eligible for free trees, even if they did not lose any trees to the Asian longhorned beetle. More info (Shrewsbury Lantern)
  • The Western Conifer Seed bug is out and about. This home invader, often found clinging to window screens, is sometimes confused with the Asian longhorned beetle. Learn more on our blog.

Other News

  • Students at Midland St Elementary School got involved with the tree replanting efforts happening at their school, organized by the Worcester Tree Initiative.
  • Quinsigamond Community College received 65 new trees from the Worcester Tree Initiative, planted with the help of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Scottie Tissues.
  • Leominster officials understand that even communities outside of the Asian longhorned beetle regulated are at risk, and are urging residents to be on the lookout. (Sentinel and Enterprise)
  • The Nature Conservancy urges everyone be on the lookout for invasive pests, because early detection is our best defense against them. (Washington Post)
  • Volunteers in Plattsburgh, NY surveyed trees for Asian longhorned beetle and Emerald ash borer. (WPTZ)
  • Maine Forest Service held their second firewood exchange on the Maine Turnpike (Kittery Rest Area) to educate visitors about the dangers of moving firewood and about the recently enacted ban on out-of-state firewood.
  • New York received an additional $1.2 million from the USDA to assist in their Asian longhorned beetle eradication efforts.
  • The Department of Agriculture in Oregon notes that one of the best ways to protect the environment is to get your firewood locally - we agree! (My Central Oregon)
  • Did you see any great Halloween costumes this year? We spotted Maine entomology staff dressed as Asian longhorned beetle and Hemlock wooly adelgid.Scary! (Village Soup)

Upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Come attend a free workshop about the Asian longhorned beetle and the Mile-a-Minute vine at Bradley Estate in Canton, MA on November 10th at 6:30pm. http://bit.ly/abIcI8
  • The Emerald Necklace Conservancy needs volunteers for an Asian longhorned beetle tree survey. Join us November 13 at Olmsted Park in Boston, sign up here.
  • Mass. Dept. of Agricultural Resources will have ALB information displays at:
    • North American Climber/Crane Training in Ipswich on November 6th.
    • Association of Massachusetts Wetland Scientists Meeting November 12th.
  • This Thursday November 4th, catch the ALB documentary "Lurking in the Trees" at Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge in Sudbury, MA at 6:30pm.
  • An ALB and EAB "Train the Trainer" session, sponsored by the Mass. Nursery and Landscape Association, will be held in Sturbridge on Nov. 17th. Pesticide recert, MCA, and CFE credits pending!
  • An Asian longhorned beetle workshop will be held at the Lowell Parks and Conservation Trust on November 18th at 6:30pm, registration is required.
  • ALB Cooperative Program Eradication staff will be on hand at Tower Hill Botanic Garden's Winter Open House Nov. 14.
  • Need a new outdoor hobby this winter? Asian longhorned beetle exit holes can be seen all winter long and are actually easier to spot when the leaves are off host trees. So get out your binoculars, find some maple, elm, birch, willow or horse chestnut trees, and grab some friends to take a look!
