  • Build-a-Beetle: It's like "Build-a-Bear" but not quite as cute and cuddly (Maine.gov)
  • How the Asian longhorned beetles found Boston, the cartoon version (Worcester T&G)
  • Melrose, MA quizzes residents about the Asian longhorned beetle. Does your town know how to spot the signs?
  • People across New England are keeping an eye out for Asian longhorned beetle, are you? Some recent efforts:
  • The Worcester Tree Initiative is working hard to re-plant and continually monitor the health of newly planted trees.
  • Ever wonder what the inside of an Asian longhorned beetle-infested log looks like? Check out this CT scan provided by the Worcester Ecotarium and Tufts.
  • A Windham County Forester in Connecticut blogged about his visit to the Worcester regulated area.
  • The Worcester T&G provided the city's perspective on the Boston Asian longhorned beetle infestation, while the Boston Globe looked at how Worcester is recovering from their own infestation.
  • A Worcester Asian longhorned beetle survey crew uncovered a most unsavory "weed" while checking the trees for beetles (Daily Worcesteria).

Upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities:

  • August has officially been declared Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month again this year! Look for events coming to your community! See the governor's proclamation.
  • 'Train the Trainer' sessions are now scheduled in Leominster and New Bedford. These T3 sessions are for anyone in the green industry, education, government, environmental groups, or neighborhood associations concerned with the potential impact of ALB in their community. MA Foresters can now receive Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) credits, and MA Certified Arborists can also receive recertification credits for attending the training!
  • Community meetings have been scheduled throughout July to discuss the Asian longhorned beetle infestation in Boston. Upcoming meeting dates: July 27, 7pm, July 29, 6:30pm, and an ALB Resource Fair on July 31, 10:00am
  • FREE talk about Asian longhorned beetle at Thayer Nursery, Milton, MA, July 29th at 7pm
  • Need Asian longhorned beetle educational materials for your event, meeting, or group? Download them or email amanda.meisner@state.ma.us.
  • MDAR will be doing Asian Longhorned beetle outreach at the Russell's Farmers Market in Wayland, MA on Wednesday July 28th and at the Mass Marketplace Festival in Wellesley, MA on Saturday August 7th.
  • The Dedham Community Theatre will be showing the Asian longhorned beetle documentary 'Lurking in the Trees' on August 14th at 10am.
  • Volunteers are wanted to help with Asian longhorned beetle tree surveys in Worcester. For more information or to register, contact the Greater Worcester Land Trust.

Past Events:

  • A summary of the community meetings held to discuss the Asian longhorned beetle infestation in Boston can be found at the Jamaica Plain Gazette.
  • MDAR's State Plant Pest Survey Coordinator Jennifer Forman Orth joined UMass Extension entomologist Robert Childs to give an ALB talk to a group of over 75 attendees at the Mass. Nursery and Landscape Association summer conference.
  • MDAR had an informational booth at the Roslindale Farmers Market to help spread the word about ALB and answer questions for residents within the Boston regulated area.
  • Forty teens and their mentors from the Student Conservation Association and the Boston Natural Areas Network were trained in Asian longhorned beetle identification so they can keep a close eye while they conduct trail work in Allandale Woods.
  • The Emerald Necklace Conservancy hosted an Asian longhorned beetle training session earlier this month. Volunteers also plan to conduct tree surveys within Emerald Necklace Parks. Future volunteer opportunities coming soon!
  • Worcester legislators held a briefing at the State House to discuss the latest news about Asian longhorned beetle in Massachusetts and screen the ALB documentary 'Lurking in the Trees'.
  • The Fall River Garden Club had an Asian longhorned beetle display at this year Barnstable County Fair.
