Becket Washington School employs none - see Orkin, an on-site certified and/or licensed pesticide applicator (certification/license #: MA26111 - Gary Greene) who may be called on to manage all or some of the necessary INDOOR pest problems that may arise.

In addition, this School has a contract with

  • Gary Greene Lic. #MA26111 of Orkin Exterminating Company, Inc., 413-445-5146.

By signing the end of this indoor IPM plan, the IPM coordinator, Devin  Galeucia, of this School and the Pest Management Professionals described above acknowledge, and agree to the terms of this INDOOR integrated pest management plan.

    A .INTRODUCTION

In compliance with the Act Protecting Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides, Becket Washington School on 2/2/2005 1:26:00 PM has prepared the following indoor IPM plan. By centralizing all of the information about this facility’s pest management practices the plan serves as a guide to direct this facility’s IPM coordinator,  Devin  Galeucia , about pest control and pesticide use.

This plan describes the pest management practices for indoor areas of the Becket Washington School and clearly states it’s pesticide use policies.

A copy of the plan has been filed with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), and at least one printed copy must be kept on site and made available to the public upon request.

      Objectives
The objectives of the integrated pest management program conducted at the Becket Washington School are listed below.

    •
    • Reduce children’s exposure to pesticides and pesticide residues whenever possible.
    •
    • Manage pests that may occur on facilities to prevent interference with the learning environment of the students.
    •
    • Provide the safest playing or athletic surfaces possible.

In light of these objectives, the Becket Washington School has selected the following as it’s IPM policy statement:

    B.POLICY STATEMENT

It is the policy of this school to implement Integrated Pest Management procedures to control structural and landscape pests and minimize exposure of children, faculty, and staff to pesticides.

    C.IPM COMMITTEE

The tasks set before an IPM committee are to:

    •
    • Develop an IPM plan. The IPM plan is in essence, a document that describes the organization and implementation of IPM on school grounds.
    •
    • Evaluate progress of the IPM program.
    •
    • Communicate about IPM - Facilitate communication within the school about IPM practices.
    •
    • Assist in development of contract specifications.
    •
    • Provide notification to parents about pesticide use.

The INDOOR committee members selected for the Becket Washington School are listed below:
      1) Devin  Galeucia (Indoor IPM Coordinator)
      2) Devin  Galeucia
      3) Robert  Sacchetti

    D. COMMUNICATING IPM WITHIN THE FACILITY

The Pest Management Professional communicates with the IPM coordinator of the facility. The IPM coordinator then passes this information onto an administrative assistant who decides how the information will be distributed throughout the facility.

Staff/Students communicate with their supervisors or teachers who then pass information onto the IPM coordinator.

    E. EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF FACILITY OCCUPANTS & STAFF

    • Head Custodian and custodial staff receive training on an on-going basis from Orkin licensed technician.
    • Training content will cover pest-reporting and pest prevention strategies such as sanitation.
    • While custodial staff receives on-going training, principal is also made aware of any procedures and/ or potential areas of concern. This information is passed to all staff at faculty meetings or via daily e-mail notes.
    • Orkin representative provides training to custodial staff. Training is evaluated by lack of pests and general sanitation and orderliness of facility.
    • Students only eat in cafetorium, which is swept and washed daily, indluing all lunch tables and kitchen facility. Staff all eat in staff lunchroom, which is cleaned daily. No food may be eaten in gymnasium or in any carpeted area. Students participate in cleaning up after themselves.

    F. INDOOR MONITORING

The IPM committee will evaluate the plan annually. When pests are present, Becket Washington School has chosen an INDOOR monitoring schedule that consists of daily inspections. When pests are absent the INDOOR monitoring schedule will consist of monthly inspections.

The following technique will be used to monitor for pests:  The facility’s contracted Pest Management Professional would conduct regular pest inspections and would then instruct the IPM coordinator as to the proper course of action.

    G. COURSE OF ACTION TAKEN FOR INDOOR PESTS

The following pests have historically and/or currently been a problem at Becket Washington School:
      • Head Lice
      • Rats & Mice
      • Students found to have head lice aresent home immediately. They are not allowed to return to school until they are checked by the nurse and found to be free of all lice and nits. Seasonally, we have one or two mice enter the building. Orkin places sticky traps out of reach and sight of students and checks them frequently, removes them and replaces them.

The School's IPM approach to managing the indoor pests includes the following actions:

      SCHOOL PEST DESCRIPTION
Head lice are sometimes found on students. Our school nurse, Laurie Blore, periodically checks all the students in the school when evidence of infestation in present (head-scratching, itching, etc.). We do not have hats or any other headwear to share in the school. Students are educatied about sharing all personal articles of clothing and items such as brushed and combs. As stated above, students found to have lice or nits are sent home. The nurse provides both oral and written education for the parents for the elimination of the lice. Students wishing to return to school must be accompanied by the parent and checked by the school nurse before allowed to return to the classroom. Small field mice sometimes enter the building in the fall. Orkin sets sticky traps and mouse traps. Our Head Custodian disposes of these - the entire set-up with the mouse - into a sealed bag. The area is cleaned and new traps are set.

      SCHOOL PEST LOCATION DETAILS
Lice are sometimes (infrequently)found on children. It is usually the classroom teacher who first notices and identifies the problem to the nurse. Notices to other members of the class are sent home at that point. Mice are sometimes found on the ground floor or in the kitchen.

      SCHOOL PEST ACTIVITY
When one child has lice, we go into the action as described above. When only one mouse is seen, we call Orkin. Otherwise, Orkin comes to inspect on a monthly basis.

      MONITORING/INSPECTION
Inspection and control has been described above. Our results are always total elimination.

      ELIMINATING ACCESS
Ours is a newly renovated school, into which we moved in September 2003. We keep it immacualtely clean and do not leave any debris or accumulate piles of anything. We prevent by keeping the school sanitary on a daily basis.

ELIMINATING SOURCES OF FOOD AND WATER
Most food is kept in sealed refrigerators and freezer. All opened food items are kept in tightly sealed containers.

      ELIMINATION OF SHELTER AND HARBORAGE
As above. We have doors that close tightly. We seal our food up, and cover such things as utensils with plastic.

      NON-CHEMICAL CONTROLS
We do not use chemicals in the school. All practices have been outlined in previous paragraphs.

      CHEMICAL CONTROLS
      PESTICIDE USE ATTESTATION:
Only pesticides allowed under the Children's and Families' Protection Act are used indoors.

    H. RECORD KEEPING

In the case of Becket Washington School, INDOOOR monitoring records will be maintained through the following technique:  The use of forms which will be filled out by the person monitoring the facility

    I. EVALUATING THE PROGRAM

The IPM committee will evaluate the plan annually .

    J. IN THE EVENT OF A HEALTH EMERGENCY

During the creation of this IPM plan, Laura Dumouchel has assigned committee member Devin Galeucia with the responsibility of applying for an emergency waiver.
