    By signing the end of this indoor IPM plan, the IPM coordinator, Jason Linn, of this School and the Pest Management Professionals described above acknowledge, and agree to the terms of this INDOOR integrated pest management plan.


    A .INTRODUCTION

      In compliance with the Act Protecting Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides, Center Elementary School on 7/21/2009 10:03:00 AM has prepared the following indoor IPM plan. By centralizing all of the information about this facility’s pest management practices the plan serves as a guide to direct this facility’s IPM coordinator,  Jason Linn , about pest control and pesticide use.

      This plan describes the pest management practices for indoor areas of the Center Elementary School and clearly states it’s pesticide use policies.

      A copy of the plan has been filed with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), and at least one printed copy must be kept on site and made available to the public upon request.

      Objectives
      The objectives of the integrated pest management program conducted at the Center Elementary School are listed below.

    •  
    • Reduce children’s exposure to pesticides and pesticide residues whenever possible.
    •  
    • Manage pests that may occur on facilities to prevent interference with the learning environment of the students.
    •  
    • Provide the safest playing or athletic surfaces possible.

      In light of these objectives, the Center Elementary School has selected the following as it’s IPM policy statement:


    B.POLICY STATEMENT

      Center School desires to prevent unnecessary exposure to children and employees to chemical pesticides and reduce the need to rely on chemical pesticides when managing pests. It is the policy of Center School to only use chemical pesticides when pest have been identified and their presence verified. Selection of treatment option or corrective actions will give priority to non-chemical actions whenever possible to provide the desired control of pests. Education of staff, students, employees, and parents about IPM will be included to achieve desired objectives. When it is determined that pesticides are needed, only those allowed by the Children''s and families Protection Act will be used. Further, only certified and/or licensed individuals will be able to use pesticides. Our policy prohibits the use of any pesticides by unlicensed staff. It will be this school policy to make the appropriate notification and posting as well as keep records of all pesticide use. A copy of the school IPM plan will be maintained in the principal’s office and available upon request.


    C.IPM COMMITTEE

      The tasks set before an IPM committee are to:

    • Develop an IPM plan. The IPM plan is in essence, a document that describes the organization and implementation of IPM on school grounds.

    • Evaluate progress of the IPM program.
    •  
    • Communicate about IPM - Facilitate communication within the school about IPM practices.
    •  
    • Assist in development of contract specifications.
    •  
    • Provide notification to parents about pesticide use.

    D. COMMUNICATING IPM WITHIN THE FACILITY

      The Maintenance Director will meet directly with pest management professional every month to cover monitoring reports pest activity log binder has been established and is kept in the main office of administration and pest activity sheets have been distributed to teachers and staff. The sheet indicates identification of pest (if known), number seen, date, time, and location. The school principal is responsible for notifying the Maintenance Director (IPM Coordinator) of logged complaints from staff. Pest management Professional will respond to the logged complaints. If any sanitation or structural or operation changes are noted, it will be written in the log along with remedial recommendations. Specific service reports will also be placed in the log binder that documents particular actions taken by pest management professional.

      Staff/Students communicate in writing with an administrator who then passes the information onto the IPM coordinator when necessary.


    E. EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF FACILITY OCCUPANTS & STAFF

    • All school staff have been informed with the Abington Public Schools IPM procedures.
    • Staff, teachers and students will be instructed on how to log pest complaints and be given a brief overview on pest identification and the conditions that promote the pest. This information will focus on pest reduction strategies connecting people behavior such as watering plants, feeding birds, eating at desks to pest problems.

    F. INDOOR MONITORING

      The IPM committee will evaluate the plan annually. When pests are present, Center Elementary School has chosen an INDOOR monitoring schedule that consists of daily inspections. When pests are absent the INDOOR monitoring schedule will consist of monthly inspections.

      The following technique will be used to monitor for pests:  The facility’s contracted Pest Management Professional would conduct regular pest inspections and would then instruct the IPM coordinator as to the proper course of action.


    G. COURSE OF ACTION TAKEN FOR INDOOR PESTS

      The following pests have historically and/or currently been a problem at Center Elementary School:
      • Fruit Flies
      • Rats & Mice
      • Ants

      The School's IPM approach to managing the indoor pests includes the following actions:

      SCHOOL PEST DESCRIPTION
      Field mice, Fruit Flies, Small ants

      SCHOOL PEST LOCATION DETAILS
      Historically signs of field mice, fruit flies and small ants have been located in the cafe area of the building. Glue boards and mechanical traps have eliminated these pest along with general housekeeping and the sealing of unwanted openings.

      SCHOOL PEST ACTIVITY
      None observed at this time.

      MONITORING/INSPECTION
      The school plans to continue to monitor the building in order to pinpoint infestations or hot spots. Reports will be generated and sent to the Maintenance Director (IPM Coordiantor)

      ELIMINATING ACCESS
      Unwanted exterior openings have been sealed and masonry has been repaired. Thus successfully eliminating access to the building.

      ELIMINATING SOURCES OF FOOD AND WATER
      General housekeeping

      ELIMINATION OF SHELTER AND HARBORAGE
      The grounds at Center School are maintained on a regular basis to eliminate overgrowth and debris.

      NON-CHEMICAL CONTROLS
      Monitoring stations have been installed. When target pests are identified, reports will be generated and sent to the IPM Coordinator.

      CHEMICAL CONTROLS
      PESTICIDE USE ATTESTATION:
      Pesticides are only applied by a certified and/or licensed applicator.
      Pesticides are used only when monitoring has shown that pests are present and when the use of the pesticide is justified or in the case of an emergency situation.
      Only pesticides allowed under the Children's and Families' Protection Act are used indoors.


    H. RECORD KEEPING

      In the case of Center Elementary School, INDOOOR monitoring records will be maintained through the following technique:  The use of forms which will be filled out by the person monitoring the facility

      The IPM committee will evaluate the plan annually .


    J. IN THE EVENT OF A HEALTH EMERGENCY

      During the creation of this IPM plan, Marilyn Weber has assigned committee member Jason Linn with the responsibility of applying for an emergency waiver.
