By signing the end of this indoor IPM plan, the IPM coordinator, Christeen Rohwer, of this Daycare and the Pest Management Professionals described above acknowledge, and agree to the terms of this INDOOR integrated pest management plan.
A .INTRODUCTION
In compliance with the Act Protecting Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides, Kidsborough on 4/8/2009 2:59:00 PM has prepared the following indoor IPM plan. By centralizing all of the information about this facility’s pest management practices the plan serves as a guide to direct this facility’s IPM coordinator, Christeen Rohwer , about pest control and pesticide use. This plan describes the pest management practices for indoor areas of the Kidsborough and clearly states it’s pesticide use policies.
A copy of the plan has been filed with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), and at least one printed copy must be kept on site and made available to the public upon request.
Objectives
The objectives of the integrated pest management program conducted at the Kidsborough are listed below.
-
| Reduce children’s exposure to pesticides and pesticide residues whenever possible. |
-
| Manage pests that may occur on facilities to prevent interference with the learning environment of the students. |
-
| Provide the safest playing or athletic surfaces possible. |
In light of these objectives, the Kidsborough has selected the following as it’s IPM policy statement:
B.POLICY STATEMENT
Kidsborough desires to prevent unnecessary exposure to children and employees to chemical pesticides and reduce the need to rely on chemical pesticides when managing pests. It is the policy of Kidsborough to only use chemical pesticides when pests have been identified and their presence verified. Selection of treatment option or corrective actions will be given priority to non-chemical actions whenever possible to provide the desired control of pests. Education of staff, students, employees, and parents about the IPM will be included to achieve desired objectives. When it is determined that pesticides are needed, only those allowed by the Children''s and Families Protection Act will be used. Further only certified and or licensed individuals will be able to use pesticides. Our policy prohibits the use of any pesticide by unlicensed professionals. It will be the Ashland Kidsbourough''s policy to make the appropriate notification and posting as well as keep records of all pesticide use. A copy of the school IPM plan will be maintained in the director''s files and will be available upon request.
C.IPM COMMITTEE
The tasks set before an IPM committee are to: -
| Develop an IPM plan. The IPM plan is in essence, a document that describes the organization and implementation of IPM on school grounds. |
-
| Evaluate progress of the IPM program. |
-
| Communicate about IPM - Facilitate communication within the school about IPM practices. |
-
| Assist in development of contract specifications. |
-
| Provide notification to parents about pesticide use. |
The INDOOR committee members selected for the Kidsborough are listed below:
1) Christeen Rohwer (Indoor IPM Coordinator)
2) Deanna Hazeltine
3) Lonna Marinaro
D. COMMUNICATING IPM WITHIN THE FACILITY
Information will be passed from the indoor IPM coordinator and pest management professional to the staff/personnel through staff meetings. Staff will be instructed on how to log pest complaints and will be given a brief overview on pest identification and the conditions that promote the pests. Pamphlets and fact sheets will be made available to staff members and our Kidsborough families concerned. In addition this information will be posted in Kidsborough''s kitchen. Information will focus on pest reduction strategies connecting people behavior, such as storing food in cabinets off the floor, and eating in designated areas to pest problems.
Information will be passed from the staff to the IPM coordinator through pest activity sheets which serve the purpose of a complaint log. These sheets will indicated the identification of pests (if known), the number seen, the date, time, and location. Staff will then hand theses sheets to Christeen Rohwer who will then log the complaints in a pest activity log binder. This log binder will be kept locked in the file cabinet in Kidsborough''s playroom. Christeen will meet monthly with Jim Gibbons, our pest management professional to cover monitoring reports, when pests are present, and every three months when pests are not. Specific service reports that document particular actions taken by Jim, remedial recommendations, or any changes in sanitation/structural operations will also be noted by Christeen in this binder.
E. EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF FACILITY OCCUPANTS & STAFF
- All Kidsborough staff members will receive IPM training.
- As stated above training content will cover pest reporting procedures such as how to fill out a pest activity sheet, and log complaints. Staff will also be given a brief overview on pest identification, and the conditions that promote pests, as well as pest reduction strategies.
- Yearly training seminars on IPM management for all staff will be offered. Reminders about trainings will be sent through email as well as verbally.
- All staff members will be present. Training will take place yearly. Training methods will be evaluated by Jim Gibbons who will meet with the IPM committee to evaluate the success or failure of the IPM program every three months.
- Kidsborough families will be notified of any problems we are having with IPM management through the method of parent notices, and pamphlets which will make them aware of any policies Kidsborough might need to make to reduce pest activity, and will also inform them.
F. INDOOR MONITORING
The IPM committee will evaluate the plan quarterly. When pests are present, Kidsborough has chosen an INDOOR monitoring schedule that consists of monthly inspections. When pests are absent the INDOOR monitoring schedule will consist of quarterly inspections. The following technique will be used to monitor for pests: Pest activity will be reported to Christeen Rohwer who will then contact our pest management professional Jim Gibbons to conduct an inspection and instruct the IPM coordinator as to the proper course of action.
G. COURSE OF ACTION TAKEN FOR INDOOR PESTS
The following pests have historically and/or currently been a problem at Kidsborough:
The School's IPM approach to managing the indoor pests includes the following actions:
| SCHOOL PEST DESCRIPTION |
Currently Kidsborough is experiencing the observance of ants. These ants are about on half inch to three quarter inches long. Due to the fact that we have just begun to experience this problem we are unsure as to the life stage of this ant. The ants seem to be prevalent during the end of the summer. |
| SCHOOL PEST LOCATION DETAILS |
The presence of these pests have been verified by visual inspection in our lobby, hallway, supply room, playroom, closet in supply room, and kitchen. |
| SCHOOL PEST ACTIVITY |
The ants have been viewed by visual inspection in clusters ranging from 2-100 at a time. |
| MONITORING/INSPECTION |
Ants are monitored through the use of pest activity sheets. Thses sheets include the indentification of pests, numbers seen, the date, time, and location. These complaints are then logged by the IPM coordinator in our pest activity log binder. Complaints are shared monthly with the pest management professional. Jim will provide a thorough inspection of the Kidsborough site and will provide the IPM committe with report identifying contributing factors leading to our ant problems. He will at this time generate a plan of corrective actions. |
| ELIMINATING ACCESS |
Kidsborough is currently taking measures to ensure that ants do not have access to our site. Once this plan is submitted and approved Kidsborough plans to take the following measures including: repairing sealing openings with caulk, and copper measure, using weather stripping to ensure the tight fitting of windows and doors, organizing stored goods off the floor and away from walls, keeping food in tightly covered lids, designating areas such as lockers where food is not allowed. |
| ELIMINATING SOURCES OF FOOD AND WATER |
As stated above we plan to ensure that ants have no access to food or water by repairing sealing openings with caulk and copper mesh, using weather stripping to ensure the tight fitting of windows and doors, organizing stored goods off the floor and away from walls, keeping food in tightly covered lids, designating areas such as mailboxes where food is not allowed. |
| ELIMINATION OF SHELTER AND HARBORAGE |
Once this plan is submitted and approved, Jim Gibbons our pest management specialist will be able to located any nests and take corrective actions. |
| NON-CHEMICAL CONTROLS |
Measures taken to control pests by non chemical control means include tamper resistant ant traps. Once this IPM is submitted and approved our pest management specialist Jim Gibbons will establish bait stations with tamper resistant baits. Jim will monitor these stationgs monthly to verify that bait is effective. |

H. RECORD KEEPING
In the case of Kidsborough, INDOOOR monitoring records will be maintained through the following technique: Pests are monitored through the use of pest activity sheets. These sheets include the identification of pests, numbers seen, the date, time, and location. These complaints are then logged by the IPM coordinator in our pest activity log binder. Complaints are shared monthly with the pest management professional. Jim will provide a thorough inspection of the Kidsborough site and will provide the IPM committee with the report identifying contributing factors leading to pest problems. He will at this time generate a plan of corrective actions.
I. EVALUATING THE PROGRAM
The IPM committee will evaluate the plan quarterly .
J. IN THE EVENT OF A HEALTH EMERGENCY
During the creation of this IPM plan, Christeen Rohwer has assigned committee member Christeen Rohwer with the responsibility of applying for an emergency waiver.
