By signing the end of this indoor IPM plan, the IPM coordinator, David Seiter, of this School and the Pest Management Professionals described above acknowledge, and agree to the terms of this INDOOR integrated pest management plan.
A .INTRODUCTION
In compliance with the Act Protecting Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides, Landmark School on 8/4/2008 5:30:00 AM has prepared the following indoor IPM plan. By centralizing all of the information about this facility’s pest management practices the plan serves as a guide to direct this facility’s IPM coordinator, David Seiter , about pest control and pesticide use. This plan describes the pest management practices for indoor areas of the Landmark School and clearly states it’s pesticide use policies.
A copy of the plan has been filed with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), and at least one printed copy must be kept on site and made available to the public upon request.
Objectives
The objectives of the integrated pest management program conducted at the Landmark School are listed below.
-
| Reduce children’s exposure to pesticides and pesticide residues whenever possible. |
-
| Manage pests that may occur on facilities to prevent interference with the learning environment of the students. |
-
| Provide the safest playing or athletic surfaces possible. |
In light of these objectives, the Landmark School has selected the following as it’s IPM policy statement:
B.POLICY STATEMENT
It is the policy of Landmark School to implement Integrated Pest Management procedures to control structural and landscape pests and use only chemicals approved in the Act to Protect Children when damage to buildings or health hazards exist from an infestation.
C.IPM COMMITTEE
The tasks set before an IPM committee are to:-
| Develop an IPM plan. The IPM plan is in essence, a document that describes the organization and implementation of IPM on school grounds. |
-
| Evaluate progress of the IPM program. |
-
| Communicate about IPM - Facilitate communication within the school about IPM practices. |
-
| Assist in development of contract specifications. |
-
| Provide notification to parents about pesticide use. |
The INDOOR committee members selected for the Landmark School are listed below:
1) David Seiter (Indoor IPM Coordinator)
2) Rick Mello
3) Rick Sauriol
4) Georgianna El Heneidy
5) Robert Broudo
D. COMMUNICATING IPM WITHIN THE FACILITY
The Pest Management Professional communicates with the IPM coordinator of the facility. The IPM coordinator then posts this information in a common viewing area dedicated to the subject of integrated pest management.
Staff/students communicate in writing with campus facilities staff who contact the Pest Management Professional and the IPM coordinator.
E. EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF FACILITY OCCUPANTS & STAFF
- IPM training will include the following members of the community: facilities staff kitchen staff dorm supervisory staff students health care staff
- IPM training will include an explanation of Landmark''s pest management policy. The procedure for reporting pests will be explained to each group. Strategies for dealing with each of the pests common to Landmark will also be explained .
- Training for all staff will be yearly. A summary page will be included in each new hire packet. Facilities staff will receive additional training in IPM strategies.
- Training will be done by in house facilities staff and coordinated by the IPM coordinator, David Seiter. Outside training will be made available to facilities staff by attending seminars and hosting speakers at the school.
- IPM information will be supplied to all parents at the beginning of each year. Students will be given handouts twice a year and posters will be hung in all dorms.
F. INDOOR MONITORING
The IPM committee will evaluate the plan annually. When pests are present, Landmark School has chosen an INDOOR monitoring schedule that consists of daily inspections. When pests are absent the INDOOR monitoring schedule will consist of quarterly inspections. The following technique will be used to monitor for pests: Reports from facility personnel (pest reporting forms) would prompt the IPM coordinator to setup monitoring traps, which would be used to identity the pest and determine its abundance.
G. COURSE OF ACTION TAKEN FOR INDOOR PESTS
The following pests have historically and/or currently been a problem at Landmark School: - Ants
- skunks,bees,chipmunks
- Wood Damaging Pests
- Cockroaches
- Mosquitoes & Flies
- Silverfish, Firebrats, & Booklice
- Rats & Mice
The School's IPM approach to managing the indoor pests includes the following actions:
| SCHOOL PEST DESCRIPTION |
WOOD DAMAGING PESTS: IPM strategies such as removal of tunnels and making building changes followed by use of approved chemicals if infestation affects building or health safety. SKUNKS:Professional trapping and removal. ANTS: Removal of water and food source followed by use of non toxic remedies. Infestations affecting building or health safety will result in use of approved chemicals. RATS AND MICE: traping, removal of food and water source and repairs to building structure to eliminate access points. FLIES: replace screens, control food sources and provide non toxic means of capture. COCKROACHES:maintain sanatation, remove water source, use of non toxic means of elimination. SILVERFISH: IPM stragegies for removal and non toxic remedies.
|
| SCHOOL PEST LOCATION DETAILS |
WOOD DAMAGING PESTS: basements of some buildings SKUNKS: wall beside Woodside hall and under Bain Dormitory ANTS: occasionally in many buildings MICE: kitchens and dorms occasionally in most buildings FLIES: occasionally in most buildings SPIDER: occasionally in most buildings COCKROACHES: occasionally in basement storage areas SILVERFISH: occasionally in dorms
|
| SCHOOL PEST ACTIVITY |
One skunk 12 or more wood infesting insects, ants, flies, spiders, cockroaches, silverfish 3 or more mice
|
| MONITORING/INSPECTION |
Skunks,Bees,Chipmunks, ants, mosquitoes and flies and cockroaches require no monitoring. Action will be taken when reports are received. Mice will require monthly monitoring using baited traps.
|
| ELIMINATING ACCESS |
Skunks, chipmunks and bees are mostly outdoors and because of the nature of our property will find a home here from time to time. Eliminating water and food sources for ants, cockroaches and mice will help eliminate these pests. Maintaining screens on all windows and doors will help eliminate flies and mosquitoes.
|
| ELIMINATING SOURCES OF FOOD AND WATER |
Any entry point from the outdoors will be sealed. If pests are found facilities staff will look for entry points. All food will be stored in storage areas that cannot be penetrated by pests.
|
| ELIMINATION OF SHELTER AND HARBORAGE |
Skunks, bees and chipmunks will find homes on the Landmark property because it is primarily a wooded area. When they are detected they are removed from the property. Ants, squirrels and wood damaging pests will be kept out by maintaining the exterior of all buildings.
|
| NON-CHEMICAL CONTROLS |
-skunks have been professionally trapped in havahart traps and removed from the campus -bees have made nests in masonry walls which were pointed to eliminate the access -chipmunks and squirrels have been trapped in havahart traps and removed from the campus -sticky traps have been used for mice -non toxic sprays have been available for ants, flies and mosquitoes
|
| PESTICIDE USE ATTESTATION: |
Pesticides are only applied by a certified and/or licensed applicator.
|
Pesticides are used only when monitoring has shown that pests are present and when the use of the pesticide is justified or in the case of an emergency situation.
|
Only pesticides allowed under the Children's and Families' Protection Act are used indoors.
|
H. RECORD KEEPING
In the case of Landmark School, INDOOOR monitoring records will be maintained through the following technique: The use of forms which will be filled out by the person monitoring the facility
I. EVALUATING THE PROGRAM
The IPM committee will evaluate the plan annually .
J. IN THE EVENT OF A HEALTH EMERGENCY
During the creation of this IPM plan, David Seiter has assigned committee member David Seiter with the responsibility of applying for an emergency waiver.
