    F. INDOOR MONITORING

The IPM committee will evaluate the plan annually. When pests are present, Montessori Children's House of Nantucket has chosen an INDOOR monitoring schedule that consists of daily inspections. When pests are absent the INDOOR monitoring schedule will consist of weekly inspections.

The following technique will be used to monitor for pests:  Reports from facility personnel (pest reporting forms) would prompt the IPM coordinator to setup monitoring traps, which would be used to identity the pest and determine its abundance.

    G. COURSE OF ACTION TAKEN FOR INDOOR PESTS

The following pests have historically and/or currently been a problem at Montessori Children's House of Nantucket:
      • Rats & Mice
      • Spiders
      • Head Lice
      • Ants were not a problem last year or so far this year. Head lice were not a problem last year or this year. 3 mice were caught in a live trap and released in the woods last winter. Spiders occasionally come into the building and are caried outside and released away form the building.
      • Ants

The School's IPM approach to managing the indoor pests includes the following actions:

      SCHOOL PEST DESCRIPTION
Mice the ones we caught were cute little furry once. They appeared to be adult and they were not particulary happy about being left out in the woods. The occasional spider is typically small and light brown.

      SCHOOL PEST LOCATION DETAILS
The mice were caught in the kitchen. The Pest control officer came out to inspect the premisis and stated that we do not have an infestation. The mice came in due to the cold weather. Spiders occasionally come into the classrooms from outside.

      SCHOOL PEST ACTIVITY
Pill bugs, flies, ants, and spiders are occassional occurances. Pill bugs and spiders more often apprear in the winter months. Ants and flies appear in the late springtime. One or two will be detected in a three month period. Head Lice occurance has been twice in 25 years, but not within the last three years.

      MONITORING/INSPECTION
Ants and Flies : Daily cleaning of food areas when school is in session resulted in early detection and removal of pests. Pill Bugs and Spider are often noticed as they venture out from corners. The school is vacuumed twice weekly. The children are causally observed for signs of head lice daily.

      ELIMINATING ACCESS
For head lice: removal of child until the recommended treatment has been performed to eliminate the pest. The other children and staff are then checked by a local nurse once weekly until all pests are eliminated. Any school items that could harbor pests are washed or stored in air tight continers to kill the pests. Screens are repaired or replaced to reduce fly entry during the spring and fall months. Ant traps were placed areas inaccessible to children.

ELIMINATING SOURCES OF FOOD AND WATER
Perishables are refrigerated. Dry food are kept in a sealed cabinet. Teachers hand removal pill bugs, spiders, and flies. A dehumdifer is run in the evenings in the basement during wet seasons to eliminate excess interior moisture. For ants, food tables are washed at least twice daily. Floors where food is consumed is swept daily and washed at least once weekly. Spills are cleaned up immediatley.

      ELIMINATION OF SHELTER AND HARBORAGE
Ants, pill bugs and spiders are detered by vacuuming twice weekly. At least once a week corners are vacuumed. For flies, counters and tables are wiped down with a bleach solution daily. Floors are swepted and trash is removed to an outdoor bin.

      NON-CHEMICAL CONTROLS
Throrough cleaning with the recommended bleach solution, removal of trash, food kept in sealed containers.

      CHEMICAL CONTROLS
      PESTICIDE USE ATTESTATION:
Pesticides are only applied by a certified and/or licensed applicator.
Pesticides are used only when monitoring has shown that pests are present and when the use of the pesticide is justified or in the case of an emergency situation.
