    A .INTRODUCTION

In compliance with the Act Protecting Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides, Next Generation Children's Center of Beverly on 12/27/2010 7:17:00 AM has prepared the following indoor IPM plan. By centralizing all of the information about this facility’s pest management practices the plan serves as a guide to direct this facility’s IPM coordinator,  Amiee Cormier , about pest control and pesticide use.

This plan describes the pest management practices for indoor areas of the Next Generation Children's Center of Beverly and clearly states it’s pesticide use policies.

A copy of the plan has been filed with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), and at least one printed copy must be kept on site and made available to the public upon request.

      Objectives
The objectives of the integrated pest management program conducted at the Next Generation Children's Center of Beverly are listed below.

    •
    • Reduce children’s exposure to pesticides and pesticide residues whenever possible.
    •
    • Manage pests that may occur on facilities to prevent interference with the learning environment of the students.
    •
    • Provide the safest playing or athletic surfaces possible.

In light of these objectives, the Next Generation Children's Center of Beverly has selected the following as it’s IPM policy statement:

    B.POLICY STATEMENT

It is the policy of this school to implement Integrated Pest Management procedures to control structural and landscape pests and minimize exposure of children, faculty, and staff to pesticides.

    C.IPM COMMITTEE

The tasks set before an IPM committee are to:

    •
    • Develop an IPM plan. The IPM plan is in essence, a document that describes the organization and implementation of IPM on school grounds.
    •
    • Evaluate progress of the IPM program.
    •
    • Communicate about IPM - Facilitate communication within the school about IPM practices.
    •
    • Assist in development of contract specifications.
    •
    • Provide notification to parents about pesticide use.

The INDOOR committee members selected for the Next Generation Children's Center of Beverly are listed below:
      1) Amiee Cormier (Indoor IPM Coordinator)
      2) Cynthia Parker
      3) Donna Kelleher

    D. COMMUNICATING IPM WITHIN THE FACILITY

The IPM Coordinator or designee will meet directly with the Pest Management Professional every month to review monitoring/service reports. The Pest Activity Log Binder is kept in the main office of the center. The Pest Activity Log Binder contains pest activity sheets, which indicate identification of pest (if known), number seen, date, time, and location. The Pest Management Professional will respond to the log complaints. If any sanitation, structural or operation changes are noted, it will be written in the log along with remedial recommendation. Specific service reports will also be placed in the Pest Activity Log Binder that documents particular actions taken by the Pest Management Professional.

Staff/Students communicate with their supervisors or teachers who then pass information onto the IPM coordinator.

    E. EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF FACILITY OCCUPANTS & STAFF

    • Management employees, teachers and food service workers.
    • Employees will be instructed on how to log pest complaints and be given a brief overview on pest identification and the conditions that promote the pests. Pamphlets and fact sheets will be made available at the time of training and or posted on bulletin boards in specific areas such as the kitchen and staff lounge. This information will focus on pest reduction strategies connecting people behavior such as over watering plants, eating at desks to pest problems.
    • Employees will receive written reminders at least annually.
    • Pest-reporting procedures and pest prevention strategies will be presented at least annually by the IPM coordinator during a staff meeting. Employees will be provided with a follow-up questionnaire to evaluate training.
    • Information will be posted on bulletin boards in specific areas such as the kitchen and staff lounge. This information will focus on pest reduction strategies connecting people behavior such as proper food storage, proper waste disposal, eating only in designated areas.

    F. INDOOR MONITORING

The IPM committee will evaluate the plan annually. When pests are present, Next Generation Children's Center of Beverly has chosen an INDOOR monitoring schedule that consists of daily inspections. When pests are absent the INDOOR monitoring schedule will consist of monthly inspections.

The following technique will be used to monitor for pests:  The facility’s contracted Pest Management Professional would conduct regular pest inspections and would then instruct the IPM coordinator as to the proper course of action.

    G. COURSE OF ACTION TAKEN FOR INDOOR PESTS

The School's IPM approach to managing the indoor pests includes the following actions:

        SCHOOL PEST DESCRIPTION
        none observed

        SCHOOL PEST LOCATION DETAILS
        none observed

        SCHOOL PEST ACTIVITY
Visual observation will be made for pests.

        MONITORING/INSPECTION
Pest activity sheets are used to indicate identification of pest (if known), number seen, date, time, and location.

        ELIMINATING ACCESS
Doors will be kept shut when not in use. Weather stripping is on the base of doors providing no greater than ¼ inch of space from floor. Cracks and crevices caulked and sealed.

ELIMINATING SOURCES OF FOOD AND WATER
Allow food and beverages only in designated areas. Keep areas as dry as possible by removing standing water and water damaged or wet materials. Promptly repair leaks and correct other plumbing problems to deny pests access to water. In Food preparation, servicing and storage areas, food and waste is stored in containers that are inaccessible to pests.

        ELIMINATION OF SHELTER AND HARBORAGE
Vegetation, shrubs and wood mulch is kept at least one-foot away from structure. In all areas dust and debris is removed regularly. Facility is vacuumed and trash is removed at least on a daily basis.

        NON-CHEMICAL CONTROLS
Pest harborage areas are eliminated to create inhospitable living conditions for pests by reducing availability of food and water, removing food debris, sweeping/vacuuming at least daily, fixing dripping faucets and leaks, and drying out wet areas. Caulk or paint is used to seal cracks and crevices. Traps are placed in areas inaccessible to children. In food Preparation and Storage Areas: food and waste is stored in containers that are inaccessible to pests; waste is removed at the end of each day if not more frequently; good cleaning practices are used including promptly cleaning food preparation equipment after use and removing grease accumulation from vents, ovens and stoves; paper products and cardboard boxes are stored away from moist areas in direct contact with the floor or walls.

        CHEMICAL CONTROLS
        PESTICIDE USE ATTESTATION:
Pesticides are only applied by a certified and/or licensed applicator.
Pesticides are used only when monitoring has shown that pests are present and when the use of the pesticide is justified or in the case of an emergency situation.
Only pesticides allowed under the Children's and Families' Protection Act are used indoors.

      H. RECORD KEEPING
