    A. INTRODUCTION

In compliance with the Act Protecting Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides the Next Generation Children's Center of Beverly on 12/27/2010 7:17:00 AM has prepared the following outdoor IPM plan about pest control and pesticide use.

This plan describes the pest management practices for outdoor areas of Next Generation Children's Center of Beverly and clearly states it’s pesticide use policies.

A copy of the plan has been filed with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), and at least one printed copy must be kept on site and made available to the public upon request.

By centralizing all of the information about this facility’s pest management practices the plan serves as a guide to direct this facility’s IPM coordinator,  Aimee  Cormier

      Objectives
The objectives of the integrated pest management program conducted at the Next Generation Children's Center of Beverly are listed below.

    • Reduce children’s exposure to pesticides and pesticide residues whenever possible.
    • Manage pests that may occur on facilities to prevent interference with the learning environment of the students.
    • Provide the safest playing or athletic surfaces possible.

In light of these objectives, the Next Generation Children's Center of Beverly has selected the following as it’s IPM policy statement.

    B.POLICY STATEMENT

It is the policy of this school to implement Integrated Pest Management procedures to control structural and landscape pests and minimize exposure of children, faculty, and staff to pesticides.

    C. IPM COMMITTEE

The tasks set before an IPM committee are to:
    • Develop an IPM plan. The IPM plan is in essence, a document that describes the organization and implementation of IPM on school grounds.
    • Evaluate progress of the IPM program.
    • Communicate about IPM - Facilitate communication within the school about IPM practices.
    • Assist in development of contract specifications.
    • Provide notification to parents about pesticide use.

The OUTDOOR committee members selected for the Next Generation Children's Center of Beverly are listed below:
      1) Aimee  Cormier (Outdoor IPM Coordinator)
      2) Cynthia Parker
      3) Donna Kelleher

    D. COMMUNICATING IPM WITHIN THE FACILITY

Pest Management Personnel to Building Staff:

The IPM Coordinator or designee will meet directly with the Pest Management Professional every month to review monitoring/service reports. The Pest Activity Log Binder is kept in the main office of the center. The Pest Activity Log Binder contains pest activity sheets, which indicate identification of pest (if known), number seen, date, time, and location. The Pest Management Professional will respond to the log complaints. If any sanitation, structural or operation changes are noted, it will be written in the log along with remedial recommendation. Specific service reports will also be placed in the Pest Activity Log Binder that documents particular actions taken by the Pest Management Professional.

Staff/Students communicate with their supervisors who then pass information onto the IPM coordinator.

    E. EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF FACILITY OCCUPANTS & STAFF

Employees will be instructed on how to log pest complaints and be given a brief overview on pest identification and the conditions that promote the pests. Pamphlets and fact sheets will be made available at the time of training and or posted on bulletin boards in specific areas such as the kitchen and staff lounge. This information will focus on pest reduction strategies connecting people behavior such as over watering plants, eating at desks to pest problems. Employees will receive written reminders at least annually. Pest-reporting procedures and pest prevention strategies will be presented at least annually by the IPM coordinator during a staff meeting.

    F. OUTDOOR MONITORING

The IPM plan will follow a Annually evaluation schedule. When pests are present, Next Generation Children's Center of Beverly has chosen an OUTDOOR monitoring schedule that consists of Daily inspections. When pests are absent the OUTDOOR monitoring schedule will consist of Monthly inspections.

The following technique will be used to monitor for pests:  The facility’s contracted Pest Management Professional would conduct regular pest inspections and would then instruct the IPM coordinator as to the proper course of action.

    G. COURSE OF ACTION TAKEN FOR OUTDOOR PESTS

      Cultural Practices

      OUTDOOR GROUNDS GENERAL MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

Waste Disposal (trash containers and dumpsters):

Dumpsters are emptied at least weekly.

      Light Management:
      None taken.

      Excess Water Prevention:
Adequate drainage is provided away from the structure and on the grounds.

      Noxious Weed Management:
      None taken.

      Playgrounds (if applicable):
Pest shelter, food and access are eliminated. Eliminate shelter- Nests are looked for and removed early in the spring before they become larger later in the summer. Nests can be found in the ground (often under shrubs, logs or rock piles), in hollow trees, among branches of trees or shrubs, under eaves, in hollow fencing, playground structures, meter boxes, and in wall voids of buildings. Wasps are looked for entering and exiting from one of these locations. Eliminate access- Openings in outside walls, playground structures, fences, pipes, etc. are sealed to prevent wasps from building nests inside cavities such as hollow fence posts, PVC pipes, meter boxes and wall voids. Eliminate Food- Good sanitation practices are used outdoors. Yellow jackets and other hornets are attracted to food and food odors. Therefore, all trash containers have tight-fitting lids. Trash containers are emptied frequently, especially during warm months.

      Nuisance weeds in pavement:
      None taken.

      Storage Sheds (If applicable):
Cracks and crevices are sealed. Doors are kept shut. Sheds are kept orderly and free of debris.

    • Selective insecticides are used where possible instead of broad spectrum insecticides.
