A .INTRODUCTION
In compliance with the Act Protecting Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides, Pine Manor College Child Study Center on 3/19/2008 3:47:00 PM has prepared the following indoor IPM plan. By centralizing all of the information about this facility’s pest management practices the plan serves as a guide to direct this facility’s IPM coordinator, Lynne Love , about pest control and pesticide use. This plan describes the pest management practices for indoor areas of the Pine Manor College Child Study Center and clearly states it’s pesticide use policies.
A copy of the plan has been filed with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), and at least one printed copy must be kept on site and made available to the public upon request.
Objectives
The objectives of the integrated pest management program conducted at the Pine Manor College Child Study Center are listed below.
-
| Reduce children’s exposure to pesticides and pesticide residues whenever possible. |
-
| Manage pests that may occur on facilities to prevent interference with the learning environment of the students. |
-
| Provide the safest playing or athletic surfaces possible. |
In light of these objectives, the Pine Manor College Child Study Center has selected the following as it’s IPM policy statement:
B.POLICY STATEMENT
Structural and landscape pests can pose significant problems for people and property. Pesticides can pose risks to people, property, and the environment. It is therefore the policy of this school to incorporate Integrated Pest Management (IPM) procedures for control of structural and landscape pests. The objective of this program is to provide necessary pest control while minimizing pesticide use.
C.IPM COMMITTEE
The tasks set before an IPM committee are to:-
| Develop an IPM plan. The IPM plan is in essence, a document that describes the organization and implementation of IPM on school grounds. |
-
| Evaluate progress of the IPM program. |
-
| Communicate about IPM - Facilitate communication within the school about IPM practices. |
-
| Assist in development of contract specifications. |
-
| Provide notification to parents about pesticide use. |
The INDOOR committee members selected for the Pine Manor College Child Study Center are listed below:
1) Lynne Love (Indoor IPM Coordinator)
2) Lynne Love
D. COMMUNICATING IPM WITHIN THE FACILITY
The Director of the center, the IPM coordinator will post information on the Parent Board concerning the submect of integrated pest managment.
Staff/Students communicate with their supervisors or teachers who then pass information onto the IPM coordinator.
E. EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF FACILITY OCCUPANTS & STAFF
- All teaching staff will receive IPM training at a staff meeting to be presented by the IPM coordinator.
- Training content will cover pest-reporting and pest prevention strategies. We will specifically cover the proper procedures for posting any treatments, proper storage of supplies to prevent pests from entering the building, and update the staff of all policies regarding pest management control.
- A yearly training will be done during one staff meeting.
- The IPM coordinator will present the training, annually, and observation and discussion will be used to evaluate the training.
- No additional IPM training is necessary at this time.
F. INDOOR MONITORING
The IPM committee will evaluate the plan annually. When pests are present, Pine Manor College Child Study Center has chosen an INDOOR monitoring schedule that consists of semimonthly inspections. When pests are absent the INDOOR monitoring schedule will consist of quarterly inspections. The following technique will be used to monitor for pests: The facility’s contracted Pest Management Professional would conduct regular pest inspections and would then instruct the IPM coordinator as to the proper course of action.
G. COURSE OF ACTION TAKEN FOR INDOOR PESTS
The following pests have historically and/or currently been a problem at Pine Manor College Child Study Center:
The School's IPM approach to managing the indoor pests includes the following actions:
| SCHOOL PEST DESCRIPTION |
Small, black ants were seen in the kitchen last summer. Mice were a problem historically, but have not been seen in the center for years. A-1 Exterminators use bait stations located primarily in the basement along the sills to prevent mice from inhabiting the school. The school was also inspected for termites.
|
| SCHOOL PEST LOCATION DETAILS |
Ants were in the kitchen. Evidence of termite activity was observed on the playground side of the building.
|
| SCHOOL PEST ACTIVITY |
None at this time.
|
| MONITORING/INSPECTION |
We frequently monitor for pests by cleaning out cupboards, washing corners of floor, and looking for droppings. A-1 Exterminators uses bait stations to prevent mice from inhabiting the building and re-bait on a monthly basis. A termite inspection is done annually.
|
| ELIMINATING ACCESS |
The grounds and maintenance departments have secured the building.
|
| ELIMINATING SOURCES OF FOOD AND WATER |
Food is stored in air-tight containers. Children's lunches are not left on site for more than a few hours, all stored in lunch boxes, bags, plastic containers or other appropriate containers. Cubbies are free of food at the end of each day.
|
| ELIMINATION OF SHELTER AND HARBORAGE |
Mice have not been a problem for years. The access has been corrected.
|
| NON-CHEMICAL CONTROLS |
Proper food storage. Maintenance and Security personnel check the building regularly and report any evidence to the IPM coordinator.
|
| PESTICIDE USE ATTESTATION: |
Pesticides are only applied by a certified and/or licensed applicator.
|
Pesticides are used only when monitoring has shown that pests are present and when the use of the pesticide is justified or in the case of an emergency situation.
|
Only pesticides allowed under the Children's and Families' Protection Act are used indoors.
|
H. RECORD KEEPING
In the case of Pine Manor College Child Study Center, INDOOOR monitoring records will be maintained through the following technique: The use of forms which will be filled out by the person monitoring the facility
