Tom Thumb employs Therinda R. Taillefer, an on-site certified and/or licensed pesticide applicator (certification/license #: 14884) who may be called on to manage all or some of the necessary INDOOR pest problems that may arise.
In addition, this School has a contract with
William E. Freudenthal of Auburn & Holden Pest Control, Auburn.
By signing the end of this indoor IPM plan, the IPM coordinator, Therinda Taillefer, of this School and the Pest Management Professionals described above acknowledge, and agree to the terms of this INDOOR integrated pest management plan.
A .INTRODUCTION
In compliance with the Act Protecting Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides, Tom Thumb on 8/24/2009 12:37:00 PM has prepared the following indoor IPM plan. By centralizing all of the information about this facility’s pest management practices the plan serves as a guide to direct this facility’s IPM coordinator, Therinda Taillefer , about pest control and pesticide use. This plan describes the pest management practices for indoor areas of the Tom Thumb and clearly states it’s pesticide use policies.
A copy of the plan has been filed with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), and at least one printed copy must be kept on site and made available to the public upon request.
Objectives
The objectives of the integrated pest management program conducted at the Tom Thumb are listed below.
-
| Reduce children’s exposure to pesticides and pesticide residues whenever possible. |
-
| Manage pests that may occur on facilities to prevent interference with the learning environment of the students. |
-
| Provide the safest playing or athletic surfaces possible. |
In light of these objectives, the Tom Thumb has selected the following as it’s IPM policy statement:
B.POLICY STATEMENT
Tom Thumb Pre-School in Auburn MA. wishes to prevent unnecessary exposure to the children and employees by chemical pesticides that may have to be used when managing pest control situations. The school will only use chemical pesticides when the pests have been identified and their presence verified by a licensed pest control manager. The school will use non-chemical action whenever possible to provide the desired control of pests. Education of the teaching and custodial staff about IPM will be included to achieve desired objectives. The school will only use pesticides that are allowed by the Children''s and Familes Protection Act and will only be administred by a licensed pest control agent. Tom Thumb Pre-School''s policy prohibits the use of pesticide by unlicensed staff. The school will make appropriate notifications and postings and will keep a detailed record of any pesticide use in the school classroom, bathroom, kitchen and playground. A copy of Tom Thumb''s pesticide plan will be maintained by the director of the school and will be available upon request to parents, staff and members of the IPM committee of the school.
C.IPM COMMITTEE
The tasks set before an IPM committee are to: -
| Develop an IPM plan. The IPM plan is in essence, a document that describes the organization and implementation of IPM on school grounds. |
-
| Evaluate progress of the IPM program. |
-
| Communicate about IPM - Facilitate communication within the school about IPM practices. |
-
| Assist in development of contract specifications. |
-
| Provide notification to parents about pesticide use. |
The INDOOR committee members selected for the Tom Thumb are listed below:
1) Therinda Taillefer (Indoor IPM Coordinator)
2) Therinda Taillefer
3) Brian Sheridan
4) Annette Lindstrom
5) Mike Gurriere
D. COMMUNICATING IPM WITHIN THE FACILITY
Bulletin Board at the school at least two working days before the application and at least 72 hours after the applications. Treated areas will be posted with clear and conspicuous warning signs along the perimeter of the area.
Staff/Students communicate in writing and leave this information in a common “drop box” for the IPM coordinator to review and pass onto the Pest Management Professional if necessary.
E. EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF FACILITY OCCUPANTS & STAFF
- teaching staff and custodial staff
- Teachers will be instructed by the director on how to log pest complaints and also be given a brief over-view on pest identifacation and the conditions that might promote the pest. MOre specific training will be held separately for the school''s custodian, Brian Sheridan. Sanitary conditions will also be addressed, if there is a problem, with all the staff at the teacher''s weekly curriculum meeting.
- annual meeting with facility staff.
- Therinda Taillefer will present the training annually unless a problem arises before the annual meeting. Evaluation will be measured if bugs return and is a reaccuring problem.
- Students eat lunches at designated tables within class room. Which are then sanatized after lunch and floors also cleaned.
F. INDOOR MONITORING
The IPM committee will evaluate the plan semiannually. When pests are present, Tom Thumb has chosen an INDOOR monitoring schedule that consists of daily inspections. When pests are absent the INDOOR monitoring schedule will consist of monthly inspections. The following technique will be used to monitor for pests: Reports from facility personnel (pest reporting forms) would prompt the IPM coordinator to contact the facility’s Pest Management Professional who would then conduct a facility audit.
G. COURSE OF ACTION TAKEN FOR INDOOR PESTS
The following pests have historically and/or currently been a problem at Tom Thumb: - Ants
- bees in playground, all are historically creating problems.
The School's IPM approach to managing the indoor pests includes the following actions:
| SCHOOL PEST DESCRIPTION |
The ants were mature paver ants, they were small brownish-red. The bees were mature yellow jackets about half an inch in length. |
| SCHOOL PEST LOCATION DETAILS |
The ants were in the church hallway where the children hang their coats. The yellow jackets were in the sand in the playground. |
| SCHOOL PEST ACTIVITY |
Maybe three yellow jackets that rarely show up and the ants are also very rare usually in spring 8 that were seen. |
| MONITORING/INSPECTION |
for the ants the floor is checked where the coats are hung, very rarely are the ants seen, and the pest control is told about them. The bees were in the sandbox only three of them seen only once in the spring and pest control is called |
| ELIMINATING ACCESS |
constant monitoring during the school year any time a pest is seen. |
| ELIMINATING SOURCES OF FOOD AND WATER |
the ants are not usually near the children in the classroom and the bees are not usually near the children inside or outside. |
| ELIMINATION OF SHELTER AND HARBORAGE |
proper monitoring and the playground is free of any brush or trees. |
| NON-CHEMICAL CONTROLS |
apple gel used to dry and kill ants. the bees were sprayed with water and removed. |
| PESTICIDE USE ATTESTATION: |
Pesticides are only applied by a certified and/or licensed applicator. |
Pesticides are used only when monitoring has shown that pests are present and when the use of the pesticide is justified or in the case of an emergency situation. |
Only pesticides allowed under the Children's and Families' Protection Act are used indoors. |
H. RECORD KEEPING
In the case of Tom Thumb, INDOOOR monitoring records will be maintained through the following technique: The use of forms which will be filled out by the person monitoring the facility
I. EVALUATING THE PROGRAM
The IPM committee will evaluate the plan semiannually .
J. IN THE EVENT OF A HEALTH EMERGENCY
During the creation of this IPM plan, Therinda R. Taillefer has assigned committee member Annette Lindstrom with the responsibility of applying for an emergency waiver.
