In addition, this School Age Childcare Program has a contract with
Jennifer Adams (Office Manager) of Griggs & Browne, 140 Brockton Avenue.
By signing the end of this indoor IPM plan, the IPM coordinator, Jennifer Schwarz, of this School Age Childcare Program and the Pest Management Professionals described above acknowledge, and agree to the terms of this INDOOR integrated pest management plan. A .INTRODUCTION
In compliance with the Act Protecting Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides, Total Achievement Program Attleboro Site on 11/27/2006 10:56:00 AM has prepared the following indoor IPM plan. By centralizing all of the information about this facility’s pest management practices the plan serves as a guide to direct this facility’s IPM coordinator, Jennifer Schwarz , about pest control and pesticide use. This plan describes the pest management practices for indoor areas of the Total Achievement Program Attleboro Site and clearly states it’s pesticide use policies. A copy of the plan has been filed with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), and at least one printed copy must be kept on site and made available to the public upon request. Objectives The objectives of the integrated pest management program conducted at the Total Achievement Program Attleboro Site are listed below. -
| Reduce children’s exposure to pesticides and pesticide residues whenever possible. | -
| Manage pests that may occur on facilities to prevent interference with the learning environment of the students. | -
| Provide the safest playing or athletic surfaces possible. |
In light of these objectives, the Total Achievement Program Attleboro Site has selected the following as it’s IPM policy statement: B.POLICY STATEMENT
The Total Achievement Program desires to prevent unnecessary exposure to children and employees to chemical pesticides and reduce the need to rely on chemical pesticides when managing pests, both indoors and outdoors. It is the policy of this program to only use chemical pesticides when pests have been identified and their presence verified. Selection of treatment option or corrective actions will give priority to non-chemical actions whenever possible to provide the desired control of pests. Education of staff, clients, employees, and parents about IPM will be included to achieve desired objectives. When it is determined that pesticides are needed, only those allowed by the Children’s and Families Protection Act will be used. Further, only certified and/or licensed individuals will be able to use pesticides. Our policy prohibits the use of any pesticide by unlicensed staff. It will be the policy of this program to make the appropriate notification and posting as well as keep records of all pesticide use. A copy of this Indoor IPM Plan will be maintained in the main office in the building and on file with the Facilities Manager. It is available upon request. C.IPM COMMITTEE
The tasks set before an IPM committee are to:-
| Develop an IPM plan. The IPM plan is in essence, a document that describes the organization and implementation of IPM on school grounds. | -
| Evaluate progress of the IPM program. | -
| Communicate about IPM - Facilitate communication within the school about IPM practices. | -
| Assist in development of contract specifications. | -
| Provide notification to parents about pesticide use. |
The INDOOR committee members selected for the Total Achievement Program Attleboro Site are listed below: 1) Jennifer Schwarz (Indoor IPM Coordinator) 2) Michael Healey 3) Marie Palumbo-Hayes 4) Jennifer Schwarz 5) Jessica Ducey
D. COMMUNICATING IPM WITHIN THE FACILITY
Diane Gordon, former Facilities Manager, spoke directly with Griggs and Browne. Staff will be instructed on how to log pest complaints and be given a brief overview on pest identification and the conditions that promote the pests. Pamphlets and fact sheets will be made available at the time of training and or posted on bulletin boards in specific areas such as the conference and multipurpose rooms. This information will focus on pest reduction strategies connecting people behavior such as over watering plants, eating at desks to pest problems. More specific training will be held annually and separately for Maintenance Coordinator. A pest log binder will be kept in the main office of the building and pest activity sheets distributed to all staff. The sheet will indicate identification of pest (if known), number seen, date, time, and location. The staff will be responsible for notifying Jennifer Schwarz, IPM Coordinator, of pests seen. Ms. Schwarz will then log complaints from staff. Griggs and Browne will respond to the logged complaints. If any sanitation or structural or operation changes are noted, it will be written in the log along with any remedial recommendation(s). Specific service reports will also be placed in the log binder that documents particular actions taken by Griggs and Browne.
E. EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF FACILITY OCCUPANTS & STAFF
- All staff associated with the program will be required to have IPM training, which includes direct care staff and the Maintenance Coordinator.
- Training content will cover the procedure of how and when to log pests seen and what steps follow (i.e. IPM coordinator to contact Pest Management Professional, etc.) A brief overview on pest identification and the conditions that promote pests will be given. Pamphlets and fact sheets will be made available at the time of training or posted on bulletin boards in specific areas, such as the conference and multipurpose room. This information will focus on pest reduction strategies connecting people behavior such as eating at desks, over-watering plants, etc.
- An initial training will take place for all staff and newly hired staff with annual reminders and information to follow. More specific training will be held annually and separately for the Maintenance Coordinator.
- A representative from Griggs & Browne will provide an annual training for staff. A satisfaction survey will be handed out at the end of the training to evaluate if the training was informative and thorough.
- Clients must eat snack only within the designated areas. Proper food disposal will be reviewed. Clients are prohibited from storing food items in their designated cubby areas, and will be advised to clean out their cubbies of all materials weekly.
F. INDOOR MONITORING
The IPM committee will evaluate the plan quarterly. When pests are present, Total Achievement Program Attleboro Site has chosen an INDOOR monitoring schedule that consists of weekly inspections. When pests are absent the INDOOR monitoring schedule will consist of weekly inspections. The following technique will be used to monitor for pests: Reports from facility personnel (pest reporting forms) would prompt the IPM coordinator to contact the facility’s Pest Management Professional who would then conduct a facility audit. G. COURSE OF ACTION TAKEN FOR INDOOR PESTS
The following pests have historically and/or currently been a problem at Total Achievement Program Attleboro Site: - Ants
- Historically, the staff in this building has visually observed ants and small field mice on occasion, usually during the change of season. The program staff will use a monitoring program using sticky traps to detect and pinpoint infestations or hot spots if the ants and/or mice are seen again. Currently, there are no problems. Reports will be generated and sent to Jennifer Schwarz (IPM Coordinator).
- Cockroaches
- Wood Damaging Pests
- Rats & Mice
The School's IPM approach to managing the indoor pests includes the following actions:
| SCHOOL PEST DESCRIPTION | The ants seen are small ants and vary in number. The staff have not noted any ants indoors over the past three months. The staff have not noted any cockroaches on the premises but include them on the list as a precaution for future incidences needing attention by the IPM coordinator or the pest management representative. Wood Damaging Pests, such as termites, have not been noted by the staff but are included on the list as a precautionary measure in case future incidences occur, which require attention from the IPM coordinator and the pest management representative. The only mice noted have been the house mouse (Mus Musculus) and only a the change of season. No mice have been seen for about three months.
|
| SCHOOL PEST LOCATION DETAILS | The ants have typically been seen at doorways or close to the kitchen area. No cockroaches have been seen. No wood damaging pests have been seen. The house mice have typically been seen in the kitchen area.
|
| SCHOOL PEST ACTIVITY | No ants have been noted the past three months. When more than twelve ants are seen together and in more than one area, the IPM coordinator will contact the pest management company for assistance. No house mice have been seen the past three months. However, when evidence of a mouse is seen (i.e. droppings, gnawing, or observance), the staff will log in the book, sprinkle talcum powder to determine areas of actvity, monitor sticky glue boards to note any rodents caught and inspect building for entry site. Maintenance will be notified of structural issues related to mice entry and pest management company will be notified of the issue does not resolve with these measures.
|
| MONITORING/INSPECTION | Sticky cardboard is placed in areas where ants and mice have been seen before. Boards are dated and inspected at least on a weekly basis.
|
| ELIMINATING ACCESS | Weather stripping is in place around doorways and other openings in the building to eliminate access to ants and rodents. Window screens and the floors are inspected regularly for holes/cracks and are repaired when needed so as to prevent ants, rodents, and cockroaches access.
|
| ELIMINATING SOURCES OF FOOD AND WATER | For all of the pests listed above the same measures could be taken to eliminate access to food and water. Food and water are limited to only the kitchen area. The food is resealed carefully after use and stored in either the refrigerator or a plastic storage bin. Opened bags and/or boxes of food are first placed in a plastic sealed bag and labeled with the date of first use. A cleaning crew comes in to the facility three times per week to sweep, mop, and wipe down surfaces. The staff also cleans up food and dirt as areas of the building are being used.
|
| ELIMINATION OF SHELTER AND HARBORAGE | The exterior area of the building is inspected regularly for signs of rodent burrowing and excessive ant infestations. No vines or high growing shrubs are planted on the premises.
|
| NON-CHEMICAL CONTROLS | Sticky boards are used to monitor/eliminate pest activity, which includes management of ants, rodents, and cockroaches. Glue boards are dated and inspected frequently.
|
| PESTICIDE USE ATTESTATION: | Pesticides are only applied by a certified and/or licensed applicator.
|
Pesticides are used only when monitoring has shown that pests are present and when the use of the pesticide is justified or in the case of an emergency situation.
|
Only pesticides allowed under the Children's and Families' Protection Act are used indoors.
|
