In compliance with the Act Protecting Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides, Wee Folk Learning Center on 1/11/2010 3:31:00 PM has prepared the following indoor IPM plan. By centralizing all of the information about this facility’s pest management practices the plan serves as a guide to direct this facility’s IPM coordinator, Kelly Davison , about pest control and pesticide use. This plan describes the pest management practices for indoor areas of the Wee Folk Learning Center and clearly states it’s pesticide use policies. A copy of the plan has been filed with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), and at least one printed copy must be kept on site and made available to the public upon request. Objectives The objectives of the integrated pest management program conducted at the Wee Folk Learning Center are listed below. -
| Reduce children’s exposure to pesticides and pesticide residues whenever possible. | -
| Manage pests that may occur on facilities to prevent interference with the learning environment of the students. | -
| Provide the safest playing or athletic surfaces possible. |
In light of these objectives, the Wee Folk Learning Center has selected the following as it’s IPM policy statement: B.POLICY STATEMENT
Structural and landscape pests can pose significant problems for people and property. Pesticides can pose risks to people, property, and the environment. It is therefore the policy of this school to incorporate Integrated Pest Management (IPM) procedures for control of structural and landscape pests. The objective of this program is to provide necessary pest control while minimizing pesticide use. C.IPM COMMITTEE
The tasks set before an IPM committee are to:-
| Develop an IPM plan. The IPM plan is in essence, a document that describes the organization and implementation of IPM on school grounds. | -
| Evaluate progress of the IPM program. | -
| Communicate about IPM - Facilitate communication within the school about IPM practices. | -
| Assist in development of contract specifications. | -
| Provide notification to parents about pesticide use. |
The INDOOR committee members selected for the Wee Folk Learning Center are listed below: 1) Kelly Davison (Indoor IPM Coordinator)
D. COMMUNICATING IPM WITHIN THE FACILITY
The Pest Management Professional communicates with the IPM coordinator of the facility. The IPM coordinator then posts this information in a common viewing area dedicated to the subject of integrated pest management. In addition, the IPM coordinator also communicates the information to the staff in an emergency staff meeting, which will discuss the pest management plan to be followed through with. All other occupants or families concerned will be distributed the pertaining information on the subject matter. Staff/Students communicate in writing in our weekly/daily communication logs, which are reviewed and discussed with Administration, who then passes the information to the Pest Management Professional if needed.
E. EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF FACILITY OCCUPANTS & STAFF
- All employees (teachers and grounds maintenance personnel) will recieve IPM training.
- Training will consist of pest-reporting procedures for the facility and pest prevention strategies such as sanitation.
- We will offer yearly memo''s that will remind staff of the procedures and precautions to take throughout the school year. We will implement a training process that will be covered during orientation of a new employee.
- The training will be presented by the Director, and will be touched upon during our quarterly staff meetings. If any employee has any questions or concerns regarding the material covered they may contact the Director or Assistant Director.
- Food is kept in a secure area in our kitchen, and if opened it is kept in a labeled zip-lock bag to ensure sanitation.
F. INDOOR MONITORING
The IPM committee will evaluate the plan annually. When pests are present, Wee Folk Learning Center has chosen an INDOOR monitoring schedule that consists of daily inspections. When pests are absent the INDOOR monitoring schedule will consist of monthly inspections. The following technique will be used to monitor for pests: Reports from facility personnel (pest reporting forms) would prompt the IPM coordinator to setup monitoring traps, which would be used to identity the pest and determine its abundance. G. COURSE OF ACTION TAKEN FOR INDOOR PESTS
The following pests have historically and/or currently been a problem at Wee Folk Learning Center: - Ants
- Past problem with ants.
The School's IPM approach to managing the indoor pests includes the following actions:
| SCHOOL PEST DESCRIPTION | We encountered ants in one of our classrooms summer/fall. The ants came in a small crack between the floor and wall. They were treated and have yet to come back.
|
| SCHOOL PEST LOCATION DETAILS | The classroom is located in the basement of the facility and was as I said coming in through a small crack between the floor and wall.
|
| SCHOOL PEST ACTIVITY | We would occassionally see 3-4 ants near the crack.
|
| MONITORING/INSPECTION | We monitored the ants and applied and insecticide on Friday nights before the weekends.
|
| ELIMINATING ACCESS | We have moved our trash barrel from that area of the classroom, we have created a cleaning schedule that makes sure the floor is continuously swept after each meal during the day and the floor is mopped on a regular basis.
|
| ELIMINATING SOURCES OF FOOD AND WATER | All of our food and water is kept in sealed containers, and are not kept in areas that would be prominant to pests.
|
| ELIMINATION OF SHELTER AND HARBORAGE | We have not encounter a problem in two years, but if it does reoccur we will call the appropriate pest management company to take care of the situation.
|
| NON-CHEMICAL CONTROLS | We have created a cleaning schedule and have been monitoring the area.
|
| PESTICIDE USE ATTESTATION: | |
Only pesticides allowed under the Children's and Families' Protection Act are used indoors.
|
