Recent News

  • Removal of Asian longhorned beetle-infested trees in the Worcester area are expected to start up again this week after being on hold during ALB's active season.
  • Survey crews found trees with ALB damage in Boylston for the first time last week. The area (Cook St.) is already within the current quarantine zone (Worcester Telegram and Gazette).
  • Starting Dec. 17, the USDA is seeking bids from contractors interested in assisting with the chemical treatment of trees within the quarantine zone (trunk injections), in order to protect the trees from ALB. Deadline 1/20/10.
  • The 2010 Projected Program Plan for ALB tree surveys and preventative treatment in the Greater Worcester area is now available.
  • Worcester City officials have revised their tree replanting policy to allow some trees to be planted under power lines (Worcester Telegram and Gazette).
  • A town hall meeting about Asian longhorned beetle was held in Worcester at the end of November; read a summary of the event (Worcester Telegram and Gazette).

Upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities:

  • DCR staff will present an ALB program at the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge in Turner Falls on December 17th at 7pm.
  • Mass. Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) staff will have a booth at the Northampton Winter Farmers Market this Saturday, December 19th at Thornes Marketplace from 9am-2pm. Stop by for free ALB notebooks, tattoos and Don't Move Firewood vinyl clings.
  • Now that the leaves are off the trees, this is the perfect time of year to check trees for signs of ALB damage.
  • Learn to survey for ALB and ALB tree damage with the Greater Worcester Land Trust. Volunteer crews go out most Thursdays at 12pm. Email anne AT gwlt.org for more details and to RSVP.

Past Events:

  • MDAR staff assisted the Fall River Street Tree Planting Program and The Trustees of Reservations in conducting an ALB tree survey in Fall River this past weekend. No signs of ALB were detected.
  • MDAR staff recently joined Friends of the Public Garden and the Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay to conduct an ALB tree survey at the Commonwealth Avenue Mall in Boston. No signs of ALB were found. An additional survey at the site will be conducted in early 2010 (details to be announced). For more information, contact jennifer.forman-orth AT state.ma.us.
  • The Department of Conservation and Recreation presented a program on forest pests at the Keene Recreational Center in Keene, NH.
  • Staff from MDAR and the Springfield Department of Parks & Recreation gave an ALB talk to 50 second graders at the Elias Brookings School in Springfield.
  • MDAR staff gave an ALB presentation at a symposium for Green Industry professionals sponsored by UMass Extension Amherst and Plymouth County Cooperative Extension.
  • DCR staff spoke to students at the Norfolk County Agricultural High School about ALB and began ongoing ALB instruction at Worcester Technical High School.
  • DCR staff gave an ALB presentation at their District Meeting and provided ALB training to their Mass. campground staff.
