Recent News

  • August has officially been declared Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month in Massachusetts again this year! Look for events coming to your community!
  • August is also Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month in:
  • The ALB Cooperative Eradication Program has tree surveyors searching the Boston area for signs of ALB, with over 17,000 trees checked, and no new infestations to date. Get the daily Boston ALB report on the Mass. ALB Cooperative Eradication Program website, and see archives of past reports.
  • Boston Asian longhorned beetle survey progress update from the Brookline Patch.
  • The Arborway Yard MBTA bus depot has been selected as the wood disposal site for the Asian longhorned beetle quarantine zone in Boston/Brookline (The JP Voice, Boston.com)
  • A DNA analysis of the Boston Asian longhorned beetles shows similarity to both Worcester and New York, but does not rule out the possibility of a foreign introduction (Worcester T&G)
  • More infested trees have been found in Shrewsbury, MA, but within the existing Asian longhorned beetle regulated area (The Shrewsbury Lantern)
  • Shrewsbury, MA has also been invaded by Asian Longhorned "Beatles" (Community Advocate).
  • Even if you are not near a known infestation, every community is at risk and should be on the lookout for Asian longhorned beetles and signs of ALB tree damage. Some recent efforts throughout New England: - Winchester, MA - Weston, MA - Rutland, VT - Fall River, MA volunteers checked Kennedy Park 7/27 found no ALB - New Hampshire asks residents to be on lookout for ALB by checking swimming pools and pool filters

  • A Nature Conservancy staff member ponders the importance of public involvement in searching for the Asian longhorned beetle, while visiting Boston's Public Garden.
  • Maine has drafted a law for a ban on out-of-state firewood, but residents express concerns about the fact that regulations are still not in place (Portland Press Herald)
  • Last week we conducted a survey to see where people have been spotting Asian longhorned beetle ads. According to the results, most people saw ALB ads on the subway or on a billboard.
  • As of August 9th, MDAR's Massachusetts Introduced Pests Outreach Project (MIPOP) has given out over 100,000 pieces of outreach! Do you have an Asian longhorned beetle ID card in your wallet? An "Ask me about ALB" button? Order FREE outreach materials!
  • Another pest to be on the lookout for! Emerald ash borer discovered in Saugerties, NY, less than 25 miles from Massachusetts, as well as at a truck stop in Tennessee.

Upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities:

Upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Mass. 'Train the Trainer' sessions are scheduled 8/17 in Cambridge and 8/18 in Leominster. These T3 sessions are for anyone in the green industry, education, government, environmental groups, or neighborhood associations concerned with the potential impact of ALB in their community and eager to spread the word. MA Foresters can now receive Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) credits, and MA Certified Arborists can also receive recertification credits for attending the training!
  • Look for Asian longhorned beetle at the MDAR booth, next Friday 8/20 at the Boston Greenfest on City Hall Plaza from 10-6pm
  • An Asian longhorned beetle training session has been scheduled at the Boston Nature Center Summer Camp, kids are great beetle busters!
  • MDAR will have the opportunity to talk with hundreds of farmers about Asian longhorned beetle at the Northeast Organic Farmers Association Summer Conference on Saturday 8/14.
  • Maine will be hosting a "Beetle Busting at Sebago Lake" event 8/14 to teach visitors about Asian longhorned beetle and emerald ash borer.
  • Bradford, Vermont will also be holding Asian longhorned beetle and emerald ash borer survey training on 8/14.
  • A free Asian longhorned beetle talk will be held at the Warwick Public Library in Rhode Island on Monday, 8/16.
  • The Nashua Public Library will be holding an Asian Longhorned Beetle Twilight Meeting on Aug 17 5:30pm to 7:30pm.
  • Upcoming airings/screenings of Asian longhorned beetle documentaries:
    • "Lurking in the Trees" will air on Boston's WGBH 2 Sunday 8/15 at 1:00pm
    • "Lurking in the Trees" will be shown in Dedham, MA Saturday 8/14 Dedham Community Theatre at 10am
    • "Bugged" will be shown Thursday, Aug. 19 at the Harvard Museum of Natural History

Past Events:

  • Volunteers from the Greater Worcester Land Trust surveyed trees for signs of Asian longhorned beetle in hopes of catching any new infestations early.
  • MDAR attended the Russell's Garden Center Farmers Market on 7/28 in Wayland, MA. In addition to fresh bread, eggs, and zucchini, visitors left with Asian longhorned beetle ID cards!
  • The Asian longhorned beetle documentary "Bugged" was shown at the Worcester Public Library on Aug. 4, and in Fitchburg, the director's hometown, on Aug. 6.

Regulated Area

  • If your company does tree work in the regulated areas of Boston or Worcester and you still need compliance training certification call the ALB hotline 1-866-702-9938 or click here for scheduling info.
  • Due to recent infestations found along the border of the Worcester regulated area, the boundary has been expanded to include a portion of the town of Boylston. View the most recent regulated area map for Worcester.
  • Any company doing tree work in the Worcester or Boston regulated areas must be certified. An updated list is now available of companies in the Worcester area who are certified.
  • Boston/Brookline regulated area map and daily Boston ALB reports.
  • To find out if you are in the Boston Asian longhorned beetle regulated area, visit the City of Boston's website and simply enter your address or view the most recent map.
