Recent News

  • The Worcester Asian Longhorned Beetle Eradication Program is currently hiring for several positions, including tree climbers and forester level 1 and level 2. Applications due 2/18 and 2/19.
  • A new "Asian Longhorned Beetle Look-alikes" mini poster from the Mass. Dept. of Agricultural Resources is now available.
  • Friends of the Public Garden in Boston plan to keep an eye out for ALB as they inventory the trees in and around the area (Boston Globe).
  • A Request for Response (RFR) opportunity for Massachusetts nurseries to bid to provide trees for re-plantings in the ALB-infested Worcester area closed at the end of January, but is expected to be reopened this March.
  • The USDA released a map of the area where trees will be removed in West Boylston and Worcester (Worcester Telegram & Gazette).

Upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Look for ALB information at booths staffed by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and USDA, February 3-5 at New England Grows and the Lumber and Building Material Expo.
  • The Mass. Dept. of Agricultural Resources is conducting an ALB training session in Worcester on Wednesday, February 24, at 1:00 PM. First 50 registrants get a free ALB t-shirt. Educators and local government staff not yet familiar with this pest are encouraged to attend. To register, call 508-755-6143 or email Jennifer.Forman-Orth AT state.ma.us
  • USDA staff will host a booth and provide ALB information at the Eastern Fishing and Outdoor Expo at the DCU Center in Worcester, Feb. 11-14.
  • Mass. Dept. of Agricultural Resources staff will have information about ALB and other invasive pests at Russell's Garden Center's Annual Winter Garden Fair in Sudbury, MA on Feb. 28 and at the Massachusetts Environmental Education Society meeting on March 3.
  • ALB Eradication Program staff will be speaking about the Worcester program at the UMass Tree Conference in Amherst, MA on March 9. UMass Extension entomologist Robert Childs will be also speaking about ALB and other insect pests.

Past Events:

  • UMass Extension entomologist Robert Childs spoke about ALB to the Mass. Tree Wardens Association, and also gave talks at the Hadley Garden Center and at Valley Bloomers in Easthampton.
  • MDAR staff spoke about Asian longhorned beetle at the annual meeting of the Massachusetts Maple Producers Association and distributed ALB outreach materials for sugarhouses and maple syrup retailers to hand out to the public.
  • MDAR staff presented the new ALB documentary, "Lurking in the Trees" to members of the Sudbury Grange Hall and Sudbury Garden Club, and also did ALB outreach at the Northeast Organic Farming Association Winter Conference.
