Recent News

  • Check out this photo collection of smoke jumpers surveying Worcester's trees for the Asian longhorned beetle. (via Flickr)
  • A Tree Grows in Burncoat: Read about the Worcester Tree Initiative's response to Asian longhorned beetle. (Worcester Magazine)
  • Tree injections in Worcester Asian longhorned beetle zone have been delayed, and are now due to begin next week. (Worcester Telegram & Gazette)
  • An Eagle Scout in Springfield, MA picked Asian longhorned beetle for his merit badge project and got 40 volunteers to show up for a tree survey. (The Springfield Reminder)
  • You've probably already heard of "Lurking in the Trees," but did you know that there's another ALB documentary on the way? Check out the trailer for Emily Driscoll's "Bugged."
  • Students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute recently designed a project to help keep track of the multiple tree replanting efforts in Worcester.
  • The Landmark recently interviewed the business owners who were fined for violating the Asian longhorned beetle quarantine zone in the Worcester area.
  • The USDA recently treated trees on Staten Island as part of its Asian Longhorned Beetle eradication program.

  • The Massachusetts Dept. of Agricultural Resources is saying a sad goodbye to its current Forest Pest Outreach and Survey Technician, Sarah Ryan, who many of you have met at various ALB outreach events over the past year. Best of luck in your new job, Sarah!
  • The website for reporting Asian longhorned beetle and ALB tree damage in Massachusetts has been updated to help you rule out similar species.
  • The Worcester Tree Initiative will plant a (non-host) tree in the ALB quarantine zone for every $50 donation received.
  • Hiking and climbing aficionados recently discussed Maine's ban on out-of-state firewood in the Views from the Top Forum.

Upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities:

  • In Falmouth or elsewhere on Cape Cod? Come hear a free talk about the invasive Mile-a-Minute Vine that threatens to take over your town, and learn about ALB too! Event is TONIGHT, April 21, at 6:30pm, at the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.
  • New York public television station WSKG will air the Asian longhorned beetle documentary, "Lurking in the Trees", on Earth Day, April 22nd, at 9:30pm.
  • The City of Worcester and the Worcester Tree Initiative will celebrate "Green Week" from April 26th to May 1st. The kick-off event will be held April 26th at 10:00am at the Thorndyke Road School.
  • The Trustees of Reservations, Leominster Con Comm, and Leominster Public Library have organized a free screening of "Lurking in the Trees" at the library on Apr 28, 7pm-8pm, with a Q&A after the movie and beetle specimens on display.
  • There are several upcoming free showings of "Lurking in the Trees" in Maine including at Skowhegan on April 23rd, Brunswick on May 4th, and Belfast on May 20th: http://bit.ly/9xdvWy The documentary will also be shown in Chewonki, ME on April 30th.
  • The Worcester Tree Initiative will hold an Asian longhorned beetle Train the Trainer event at MA Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Worcester on May 6th from 5-7pm.
  • There will be a free Asian longhorned beetle talk in Troy, NH on May 6th at 7pm, organized by University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension.
  • Are you organizing a Biodiversity Day or BioBlitz event in Massachusetts? The Mass. Dept. of Agricultural Resources will send you free ALB ID cards and other materials. See our Media and Outreach page for samples.
  • Past Events:

    • Staff from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) recently provided information on ALB to farmers during Massachusetts Agriculture Day at the State House.
    • MDAR staff recently provided ALB outreach to the general public at Down:2:Earth, a sustainable living expo in Boston.
    • The Asian longhorned beetle documentary "Lurking in the Trees" was recently shown at the Viles Arboretum in Augusta, Maine (Village Soup).
    • PBS Rhode Island recently aired the Asian longhorned beetle documentary (ECO RI).
